as WRIA 17

Water Resource Inventory Area (WRIA) 17 covers more than 250,000 acres of the northeastern Olympic Peninsula and is one of 62 WRIAs state-wide.

Nearly 27,000 people live in the watershed.  This populations is represented in water resource planning activities by the WRIA 17 Planning Unit.  For the Planning Unit website and a list of current members CLICK HERE

By law, water is a shared resource.  The job of managing it is also shared.  The WRIA 17 Planning Unit is the collective body tasked to represent the residents of our watershed in developing an approach to water management as well as specific solutions to meeting pressing challenges.  The Planning Unit has developed a Comprehensive Watershed Plan and a Detailed Implementation Plan to guide its actions in the coming years.

The Planning Unit is now focused on carrying out recommendations adopted in their Plan.  Recommendations reflect actions needed to address water quality, water supply, and habitat concerns.  Currently, the Planning Unit is closely following the work of Washington State Department of Ecology on recommendation #36, which recommends setting minimum stream flows for WRIA 17 creeks and rivers.

How to find out more information...
Recognizing how complex water resource issues can be, the Planning Unit produced two newspaper inserts to inform readers, but most importantly to inspire productive participation in water management decisions in WRIA 17.  These publications were published in the Peninsula Daily News in late 2007.  Click on the thumbnail images below to download a copy or request a copy by contacting WSU at 360-379-5610.
