Water usage increases in summer by 30%...lawns, gardens and cars washes being the major draws. Here are some summertime tips for conserving water to reduce your bills and help protect the precious 2.5% of the world's water that is fresh! Cool off kids using sprinklers where your lawn needs water most. Mulch garden vegetables and trees to conserve water. Water your plants deeply but less often...this can result in deep roots and more drought tolerance. Ask your local nursery about xeriscaping with native plants. Monitor your water bill. Check for leaks. Consider letting your lawn go brown in the summer and fall. Consider reducing the size of your lawn . Landscape with native plants...they require less water & less maintenance once they are established, and they are typically more resistant to native pests & diseases. Wash your car at a commercial car wash...they conserve and recycle water, and most deposit graywater into city sewer systems for further processing. Consider installing a rain barrel collection system. A 1200 sq. ft roof in Jefferson County sheds 21,000 gallons in one year! |
